Mesmerize is a magazine dedicated to music, as people dive into the benefits of music and how music is meaningful to many through a conducted survey of student's most meaningful songs. It is very interactive sharing multiple QR codes of music throughout and includes a variety of original illustrations, concepts, and photographs. Throughout the magazine, I use consistent typefaces, a limited color palette of black, white, and pink throughout, as well as a half tone style for images and round circle elements. Table of Contents and Masthead/credits. I played around with fun elements such as the number signs for page numbers and the antenna overlapping with the type.
In this feature, I explored the use of material objects as type for the headline, as it spells out 'Benefits of Music' with earbud wires. The rounded circles are a consistent element throughout to tie everything together.
The feature continues on with a pull quote, footnotes, and continued use of pink circles and half tone styled imagery.
This department continually features a trending artist interview to dive deeper into the meaning of their songs and style as an artist.
In this feature, I conducted a survey to various students and asked them questions related to their favorite or most meaningful song. The illustration on the left page are all the words that students used to describe how music makes them feel. I wanted each word to feel different in mood/style and have words vary in size based on how many people said the same word.
The feature then goes into short quotes from each survey respondant and the full playlist. The goal was to be able to both read the quotes while listening to each song to fully understand the music better.
Each song title listed above each quote also have a little colored dot next to it that tells you what genre of music each song falls under. The data on the genres is shown by the use of the pie chart/infographic.
To tie in the last page of the spread, I created a collage-like illustration to go along with the quote of my favorite song.
This department discusses various studies related to music.
This feature showcases the band half alive and their latest album review. I played around with the album cover image on the left page and emphasized the ear as it went along with the title of the article.
As the feature continues, I wanted to be able to display the album similarly to the previous feature, but with less songs to display, I thought a mockup would pair nicely.
The other ad I created was a Spotify ad, as well as the last department which discusses innovations in music. This article discusses how you can use the brain waves of multiple individuals to create original music.
As the magazine folds as the front and back cover, the image continues, cutting the woman figure in half. The instruments radiate from the spine of the magazine.
Below includes concepts and navigation for a mobile app version of the magazine. Each issue includes a subscription to the Mesmerize app, which allows for even easier accessibility between shared songs, music videos, and more within the articles.
